FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is chaff?
Chaff is finely chopped hay or straw used as a nutritious, high-fibre feed for horses and other livestock.
How much chaff does my horse need?
• Horses should receive at least 1.5% to 2% of their bodyweight per day in forage. This mean that for every 100kg of body weight you should be feeding your horse at least 1.5kg to 2kg of fibre-rich feed, such us hay or chaff, every day.
• For example, a 300kg pony requires 4.5kg or a 500kg horse requires 7.5kg of forage per day.
• Fresh drinking water should always be available.
• An individual horse's nutritional needs vary depending on many factors such as age, weight, workload and overall condition. We recommend consulting a qualified equine nutritionist for a specific feeding plan for your horse.
What does steam cut mean?
We use a process called "steam cut" where high-temperature steam is applied to the hay as it moves along a conveyor belt just before cutting. The steam is applied to the leaves and stems of the hay in a precise amount to moisten and toughen the hay. This process allows the hay to pass through the cutter blades with minimal shattering or splintering. The result is a clean, consistent product with a precise, uniform chop length and fewer fines. All chaff is completely dried before being packaged.
Why is steam cut chaff better?
Chaff is often steam cut to produce a more superior product that is more desirable for horses to eat. Chaff that is steam cut is more likely to have a consistent fibre length, higher palatability, less fines and less dust. Applying steam to the hay also helps destroy possible toxins and bacteria that may have been naturally present from the environment, which helps support respiratory health. Our steam cut chaff smells so fresh, your horse will love it!
Why did you introduce the new compressed plastic packaging?
Through the transition to our new packaging, we’re enhancing both business efficiency and sustainability. As a small, family-owned business, these improvements allow us to maintain the same premium quality our customers expect — without compromising on price or value.
The new packaging provides greater benefits to our customers, including:
• Keeps the product fresher for longer
• Smaller package size is more convenient
• Improved freight efficiency and reduced freight costs
• Full traceability from paddock to feed bin
• New packaging uses 42% less plastic (compared to poly bags)
How do you recommend opening the new style packaging?
The easiest way to access the contents is to cut the bag open and empty it into your feed bin. There are several ways to do this, depending on what you find most convenient. We recommend cutting the bag around the middle—approximately halfway down its length—using a safety knife and then pulling the two halves apart. This method is simple, helps reduce spillage, and is especially useful for anyone who may find lifting 25kg challenging, as it halves the manual handling load. You can then empty the contents section by section into a secure feed bin. The chaff may need to be loosened slightly, which can be done by hand or with a pitchfork, before it's ready to feed out.

Why do I need to weigh chaff before feeding?
Our chaff is compressed in our new packaging and because of this it’s more dense than loose-fill alternatives. That means a standard scoop may hold more than expected—making it easier to overfeed without realizing. To ensure your horse receives the right amount, we strongly recommend weighing the chaff on a set of scales before feeding. Do this at least once to gauge the correct amount before feeding. This a simple yet important step to ensure your feeding the correct amount to avoid overfeeding.
Why does there seem to be less chaff in the new compressed style packaging compared to the poly style?
Our chaff is accurately weighed by our new packaging machine, ensuring each bag contains exactly 25kg of chaff. As the chaff is compressed, the volume of the chaff has been reduced. Once the chaff is removed from the packaging it will expand in volume to some extent, however because the fibres have been pressed together you may notice the volume is still less compared to the free-fill poly bag style.
Can chaff spoil or “sweat” in plastic packaging?
Rest assured—our chaff is carefully cured and thoroughly dried before packing, so it stays fresh and stable. As a leading chaff exporter, our products are regularly sent overseas in shipping containers for months at a time, where they can be exposed to heat and humidity. Even in these challenging conditions, our chaff has been tested and maintains its premium quality. We haven’t had a single bag spoil! So when you open a bag, you’ll find it smelling fresh and sweet! Storage advice: Keep chaff in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. It has a 12-month shelf life, so you can enjoy it at its best for a full year.
Do you make a low sugar chaff?
Yes, our Premium Lucerne Chaff is low in sugar and low in starch.
